INTERACTION
WITH CIVIL SOCIETY |

The two-day conference provided
an occasion not only for close interaction
between the media persons of the
region, but also a large number
of the representatives of civil
society and the government. The
dinners and lunches hosted by the
leading representatives of Nepal
provided the occasions for a useful
interaction between the media and
civil society. First reception was
given by the Nepalese Media Society
that was attended by the whole press,
intellectuals, officials and NGOs.
The lunch on January 1 was hosted
by the Leader of Opposition that
was attended by a large umber parliamentarians,
politicians and trade unions. The
dinner on this day was given by
the Tourism Board that also made
a very useful presentation on tourism,
followed by a cultural program.
 
Similarly, the lunch on January
2 was hosted by the Nepalese Federation
of Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
It was attended by the leading businessmen
and professionals. Since the dinner
on this day was given by the Prime
Minister, leading officials, judges,
diplomats, political leaders and
parliamentarians interacted with
the journalists from the region
and exchanged views. The dinner
was hosted by Prime Minister of
Nepal Deuba that was attended by
a large number of parliamentarians,
judges, officials and diplomats.
The
Second South Asian Free Media Conference
on Media and Peace met with a resounding
success and achieved all objectives
that the organizers had set before
themselves. It was very representative,
well attended, broadly covered and
seriously taken by all those who
matter. The Conference passed all
declarations and documents with
unanimity and also approved SAFMA's
Constitution, beside electing the
Secretary General and approving
the Regional Executive Body. It
laid the institutionalized basis
for media solidarity, set an agenda
for peace and cooperation in the
region. The Group meetings came
out with very useful reports and
action plans. Now SAFMA, recognized
as the most representative body
of the media in South Asia, can
go on for follow-up activities and
contribute to peace, cooperation,
freedom and progress of the region
as a most effective pressure group.
