INTERACTION WITH CIVIL SOCIETY

The two-day conference provided an occasion not only for close interaction between the media persons of the region, but also a large number of the representatives of civil society and the government. The dinners and lunches hosted by the leading representatives of Nepal provided the occasions for a useful interaction between the media and civil society. First reception was given by the Nepalese Media Society that was attended by the whole press, intellectuals, officials and NGOs. The Second South Asian Free Media Conference on Media and Peace met with a resounding success and achieved all objectives that the organizers had set before themselves. It was very representative, well attended, broadly covered and seriously taken by all those who matter. The Conference passed all declarations and documents with unanimity and also approved SAFMA's Constitution, beside electing the Secretary General and approving the Regional Executive Body. It laid the institutionalized basis for media solidarity, set an agenda for peace and cooperation in the region. The Group meetings came out with very useful reports and action plans. Now SAFMA, recognized as the most representative body of the media in South Asia, can go on for follow-up activities and contribute to peace, cooperation, freedom and progress of the region as a most effective pressure group.
