DHAKA: Water-level of the River Padma continued rise for past three days and was flowing 8cm above the danger mark on Wednesday at Goalanda point, inundating low-lying areas Faridpur.
Flooding elsewhere in the country improved a little as monsoon remained weak over the country and adjoining parts of India for the past few days, said the flood forecasting and warning centre.
Prevailing flash-flood in north and north-eastern part of the country will improve further for the weak monsoon, said the centre.
Water-level rose at 34 points out of 73 points monitored by Water Development Board on Wednesday while water-level fell at 34 points and at one point it remained static. Only Padma was flowing above danger mark at Goalanda.
The Brahmaputra-Jamuna has started falling upstream and the rivers may not cross danger
level at Bahadurabad, Serajganj and Aricha in this spell.
The Ganges-Padma and the Meghna continued rising at a relatively lower rate. The rate of rise will be further slowed down, said the board officials.
New areas along the banks of Padma have been inundated including the low-lying and char areas of district headquarters, Charbhadrasan and Sadarpur upazilas of Faridpur, reports the correspondent in Faridpur.
Flood water already entered into croplands at North Channel and Charmadhabdia union in district headquarters, Jhowkanda and Harirampur union of Charbhadrasan and Dieranarkelbaria, Char Manir, Dhewkhali, Ataker Char and Char Nasirpur unions of Sadarpur.
Abdus Salam, 32, a farmer of village Alamnagar under Charvadrasan upazila, said floodwater suddenly rose too high and most of his peanut and transplanted aman crops have been damaged.
Md Ayub Ali, chairman of Char Manir union council of Sadarpur, told New Age that a large portion of aman crops in low area have already gone under water.
If the water level continues to rise, most of the union will be flooded soon, he said.
