LALMONIRHAT: The Border Security Force of India on Friday evening handed over the body of a Bangladeshi fisherman to the Bangladesh Rifles in the Burimari border area at Patgram in Lalmonirhat.
The victim, identified as fisherman Maminul Islam, 25, son of Mozammel Haque, a resident of village Islampur near Burimari border of Patgram, was shot dead by the BSF early Thursday morning and his body was taken away by the Indian side.
Lalmonirhat 31 Rifles Battalion BDR jawans of Burimari BOP camp received the body from BSF members.
About 10 to 12 fishermen of village Islampur went for fishing in the River Dharla at dawn on Thursday.
These fishermen went near to the no-man’s-land when they came under fire from the BSF. Maminul Islam received bullet wounds and died on the spot but the other fishermen managed to save themselves by jumping into the river, BDR sources said.
The Commanding Officer of the Lalmonirhat 31 Rifles Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Abu Saleh confirmed the matter, saying the border remained quiet despite the incident.
