DHAKA: The national council of the main opposition BNP billed for December 8 will not defer, though the party is facing huge difficulties in holding councils for its grassroots levels.

The main opposition in its preparation for the upcoming council has already finalised its logo, website and the theme song.

"The council will be held on December 8 and there is no scope of deferring it," Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, joint secretary general of BNP, said at a press briefing at party's Nayapaltan office yesterday.

"Clouds will shroud the BNP's political sky if the national council is deferred," he said, adding they have to submit their constitution to the Election Commission by January 25 after it is approved in the council.

Party insiders say the central leadership may soon announce new committees for some important units, including for the Chittagong city, council of which was recently foiled due to intra-party clash.

The party has prepared a "council song" following the theme of US President Barack Obama's much-hyped election song "Yes We Can". It has also picked up "different people different ways... consensus to save the country" [Nanan Manush Nanan Path... Desh Banchate Oikyamat] as the slogan for the council.

Goyeshwar, convener of the publicity sub-committee formed for the national council, also said they will start all-out publicity before the Eid-ul-Azha through the theme song, mobile ringtones, monograms, T-shirts, caps, pens, coat pins and billboards.

Replying to a question on the council venue, he said it will be held at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre.

"The council will be held in three sessions in a day."

He added the party has prepared TV commercials and advertisements for the print media on the upcoming council and seven leaders of different levels will take part in the TV commercial as models.

Asked about the conflict, clash and untoward incidents that took place in councils across the country, he said those incidents are not unusual in a big party like BNP and will have no impact on the national council.

The party is facing huge problems to complete its district-level councils for intra-party conflicts across the country. Even in some places BNP factions are engaged in clashes centring leadership selection.

The Chittagong city and Faridpur district unit councils were foiled due to the factional fights, while the Panchagarh district council was suspended for internal conflicts.

Two factions were engaged in a clash after the council session in Cox's Bazar, whereas in Sunamganj a group leader filed a case against the party's secretary general over holding the council.

According to the party plan, councils will be held in several districts including Feni, Laxmipur and Rajshahi within a few days.

Against this backdrop, a number of district units have already requested the party high-ups to defer the national council.
