DHAKA: Bangladesh is going to appoint a new honorary consul to Mauritius in place of A Ganny Joonas, a Mauritius national who had been serving as the honorary consul for 16 years and has been dismissed on charge of various irregularities.
"We have cancelled the appointment of our honorary consul as we found proof of several allegations against him", foreign minister Dipu Moni said yesterday adding that Dhaka would appoint an honorary consul in Port Louis very soon.
The Mauritius government has been informed of the decision, she told reporters.
Foreign ministry sources said that two Mauritius nationals were under consideration for the post - one of them a parliament member and son of their former labour minister.
Presently Bangladesh is maintaining its diplomatic relations with Mauritius through its mission in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi.
Sixteen years ago, Ganny Joonas was appointed the honorary consul of Bangladesh to Mauritius by the then Bangladesh High Commissioner in Kenya, Lt. Col. (Ret) Shariful Islam Dalim, one of the death sentence convicts in the Bangabandhu Murder Case who fled from Nairobi in 1996 immediately after the Awami League had come to power. There were several allegations against Ganny Joonas that he was charging Mauritius Rupees 1,000 for renewing passport of Bangladeshi workers, the sources said. Passport renewal is not within the job jurisdiction of any honorary consul.
Also, he would attest documents and work permits of Bangladeshi workers, issue visas to foreign nationals for visiting Bangladesh in exchange of money and no receipts were issued against the payments, the sources said.
They said Ganny Joonas would also use his designation as Bangladesh consul general instead of 'honorary consul general' and use the letterhead inscribed with 'Consulate of the People's Republic of Bangladesh', which should be 'Honorary Consulate'.
