DHAKA: The 107th birth anniversary of Jasimuddin, the poet of rural people, will be observed today in a befitting manner across the country.
To mark the day, various socio-cultural organisations will organise different programmes including laying of wreaths on the poet’s grave at Gobindapur near Faridpur town in the morning. Jasim foundation will also hold a prayer session and a discussion at the venue.
Drama troupe Padatik Natya Sangsad will hold a two-day programme at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Dhaka.
Jasim Foundation Faridpur will also hold a forth night long fair at Gobindapur from January 10 which will feature folk performances.
Faridpur Shilpakola Academy has organised a folk festival titled ‘Gau Geramer Gun’ (sing rural songs) at Tambulkhana, the birth place and maternal home of the poet. Folk singers from Kushtia and Faridpur are performing murshidi, marfati, zari, bichar gan and baul songs at the fortnight long festival that began on December 26.
Jasimuddin, popularly known as Palli Kabi for his easy and rhythmic rhymes, has also authored many witty and vivid stories on rural people and their lifestyle.
A pioneer of the progressive and non-communal cultural movement, Jasimudding was an ardent supporter of socialism.
He was one of the fore-runners who had protested the Pakistan government’s attempt to stop broadcasting Tagore songs in the 1950s.
Born on this day in 1903, Jasimuddin worked as Ramtanu Lahiri assistant research fellow under Dinesh Chandra Sen for collecting folk literature from 1931 to 1937.
As a college student, he wrote the poem ‘Kabar’ (Grave), a dramatic monologue of an old man talking to his grandson in front of his wife’s grave. Kabar was included in school textbooks while Jasimuddin was still a university student.
His first book Rakhali (Shepherd) was published in 1927 while his other noted writings include Naksi Kanthar Math (1929), Sojan Badiyar Ghat (1933), Beder Meye (1951), Pallibadhu (1956), Bangalir Hasir Galpa, and Dalim Kumar.
He has also written a novel, Boba Kahini, in 1964.
Jasimuddin has composed numerous songs, especially Bhatiali. He also wrote some modern songs, Islami songs and patriotic songs during the country’s war of liberation.
In 1969, Jasimuddin was awarded doctorate degree in literature by Rabindra Bharati University of India. He won several other laurels, including the President’s Award for Pride of Performance (1958), Ekushey Padak (1976) and Swadhinata Padak (posthumous, 1978).
In 1974 he was also nominated for the Bangla Academy Award but he refused to accept it. Jasimuddin died in Dhaka on 13 March 1976 and was buried in his village.
