Maldives to submit resolution to UN
Monday, July 06,2009

MALE: Ministry of Foreign Affairs has revealed that Maldives would soon submit a resolution to UN Economic and Social Council. Foreign ministry revealed this at a press conference held at Fansavees Maalum.

Speaking at the press conference, Deputy Foreign Minister Hawla Ahmed Didi said that the main objective of the resolution would be to further strengthen the workings of SIDS Group.

Deputy Minister Hawla said while Maldives is set to graduate from list of Least Developed Countries (LDC) next year, other small island states would also graduate along with Maldives and that loss of LDC status was a huge concern for small island states especially with delicate environments. Loss of LDC status means loss of certain concessions and privileges.

The special group of small island states SIDS or Small Island Developing States is mostly countries included in the LDC list which currently enjoys the concessions and privileges that comes with LDC status.

She highlighted the need to strengthen workings of SIDS group and that Maldives would submit a resolution to facilitate this to the General Segment of Substantive Session of the UN Economic Council to be held in Geneva from 6-31 of July. She also said work is underway to seek support for the resolution.
