MALE: Foreign Minister Dr. Ahmed Shaheed who has joined the ruling MDP after leaving his close friend Dr. Hassan Saeeds Gaumee Party has said the main opposition DRP of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom is drowning and even if Gayoom remains or leaves DRP leadership he will never become the president of Maldives again. Shaheed said even if Gayoom resigns, DRP will end up being spilit and will have no strength. If DRPs Deputy Leader Thasmeen Ali takes reigns of DRP, then it will be the end of Thasmeens political career. DRP is drowning. People like Alhaan, Mundhu, and Ali Waheed are missiles for speeding up the drowning process. Gayoom is not going to come back to power. He is showing Thasmeen as his successor. People like Hassan, Gasim have left the party. Thasmeen will not survive, Shahhed said.

He said the demise of DRP is imminent because there is no leader in the party who will be accepted by the people. He pointed out people will not accept DRP/PA members like Nihan, Alhan, Yamin and Ali Waheed. He stated that Maldives will not have a democracy if DRP is around the political scene. What DRP can do and what they are talking about going is hitting the streets on November 3 and burning the country and rising to power. This would be the end of democracy. The leader of DRP, Gayoom is saying their goal is to be in power for lifetime. That is one party ideology, and not a democratic ideology, Dr. Shaheed said. He said because of this attitude and behavior of DRP and its potential outcome disappearing from the political scene, Gaumee Party which he left last week will become the main opposition party in the Maldives.

Some observers were surprised to hear Shaheeds prophecy about Gaumee Party after he had left the part. They wondered why Shaheed then left the party . They also feel Shaheeds thinking about PA leader Yamin is is not correct as Yamin dominates lot of power in DRP and the Majlis. Some people who have thought Yamin is not a capable leader after weighing the disadvantages, say Yamin has become more popular recently despite some odds and even some of his critics say Yamin is the undisputed new leader who is intelligent and talks sense.

Shaheed who was once one of the closest confidante of Gayoom who appointed him as the Foreign Minister after displeasing his long time friend Fathulla Jameel who held the post for 27 years, resigned from the post in 2007 shortly after Hassan Saeed resigned from the post of Attorney General. After blaming Gayoom for his lack of sincerity to reform, calling his reform agenda a failure. Hassan Saeed ran for presidency with Shaheed as his running mate, but after losing in the first round, they joined MDP Alliance which won the presidency for Mohamed Nasheed ending the 30 year rule of Gayoom. Hassan and Shaheed together with their colleage former Justice Minister who also resigned with Hassan Saeed, also formed their own political party, Gaumee Party.

President Nasheed appointed Hassan Saeed as his Adviser, Jameel as Communication and Civil Aviation Minister and Shaheed . But Hassan Saeed and Jameel resigned from their posts opposing President Nasheeds policies. Shaheed stayed on , supporting the President and finally joining MDP. Explaining why he joined MDP, Dr. Shaheed said he tried his best reengage Gaumee Party with MDP, but he has not succeeded as Hassan Saeed and jameel were not thinking in the same wave length as him. He said he had three choices, they are, resign from politics, resign from Government and stay back in the Government. Looking at the last two choices, he said, we sold ourselves to bring this Government to power for the sake of the people. Nasheed was the best choice of the people. This is because people believed democracy will progress under him. It is not yet time to say I give up to that faith. One year is much too short a time to give up.

He said splitting a coalition is very dangerous, If we do not maintain it, Nasheed will be forced to bring a new party. MDP may still decide to form a coalition with Yamin, he said.
