Indian firm to build Maldives airport

MALE: The Government of Maldives has yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with GMR Infrastructure Global Limited to develop a trendsetting international airport at Hanimaadhoo in the Upper North Province. Under the aegis of the Memorandum, the Government and GMR would work together to ascertain the technical feasibility and viability of the project. Both the parties are committed to moving the understanding ahead over the next few months.

The project is expected to create a number of economic development opportunities in the north of Maldives and will foster greater development of this region.

GMR Group is a Bangalore, India, headquartered global infrastructure major with interests in Airports, Energy, Highways and Urban Infrastructure. The Company has successfully employed the public-private partnership model to build a portfolio of high quality assets.

Minister of Economic Development Mr Mohamed Rasheed signed on behalf of the Government of Maldives, and Mr. P. Sripathy, CEO of Hyderabad International Airport signed on behalf of the GMR Group.
