MALE: Hiyam Afeef has become the first woman from Maldives to get a degree in aeronautical science. She graduated from the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, USA, which is considered as the world’s oldest, largest, and most prestigious university specializing in aviation and aerospace. In an interview given to the University, Hiyam said “There are not a lot of airports. The main transportation is boats and planes. I want to start by flying seaplanes, but eventually I want to fly internationally,” Afeef said.

Even though she has a job waiting for her with a Maldive sea plane, she said that her real interest lies in aviation safety.

Maldivian students continue to go for high studies in different fields of aeronautics and after studies they work in Maldives and abroad as well.

Mohamed Izam, 22, is also one of Maldivian students who completed studies in aeronautics and is at the time being working in an Australian airplane repair company. There are some more Maldivian men who are working in this field in UK as well.

According to these men, they is a good chance of getting good salary working in Maldives in the same field but in this country they would have to work on small aircrafts. They said that this would provide obstacles for them to progress in this field.

In addition to aeronautics, Maldivians continue to do well abroad in other fields as well. For example there are three Maldivian scientists working in NASA.
