MALE: Maldives Customs Service had seized a large number of bird eggs and live birds. The attempt to import them was made by a Maldivian passenger flying from Bangkok by the Bangkok Airways flight PG 711. The eggs and birds were identified while checking his luggage. Four plastic boxes covered with the garments contained 109 eggs and 8 plastic pipes 1 ft each were in a cardboard box. The pipes contained 35 birds and another box contained one bird. Birds included 16 canneries, 16 gordians, 3 parrots and 1 red rum and 16 of them were already dead at the time of the seizure.
The birds and eggs were handed over to the animal quarantine facility and Police is investigating the matter.
Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture had prohibited import of live birds to Maldives.
