MALE: Well-known businessman Ahmed Ibrahim Didi (Campus Didi) was assaulted by a group of thieves who stole a total of Rf3.5 million from him after stabbing him with a sharp weapon. The robbery occurred around 12:30am Monday, near Novelty Bookshop on Fareedhee Magu. Haveeru sources say that Didi had been carrying US$200,000 and Rf1 million in cash when the group attacked him but the Maldives Police Service has not confirmed the amount. A Bangladeshi man who was with Didi at the time was also injured in the attack.

Didi’s younger brother, and the owner of Veyla group of shops, Mohamed Ibrahim Didi said that they had given the details of the attack to the Police. He said that he could not give any additional details because he was at the Airport to take his older brother to India for further treatment due to the seriousness of the injuries.

“His condition is very serious,” he told Haveeru reporters on Monday morning around 10:00am. “We are leaving with him to India and I’m at the airport now. So it would be better if you contacted the Police for more details. The other person who was injured in the attack was a Bangladeshi man who was with Didi. However, he was lucky and didn’t suffer any serious injuries.”

A Police Media Official said that the thieves were armed with sharp objects and had attacked Didi and the Bangladeshi man, causing serious injuries.

“We can’t divulge any additional information about the case at this time,” the official said.

The Bangladeshi man had suffered a slash across his arm. According to eyewitnesses, when Didi collapsed onto the pavement after he was stabbed, a small pool of blood had formed on the spot.

The attack occurred just days after many prisoners who were incarcerated at the Maafushi Jail were released to house arrest in Malé.
