Susanthika
Jayasinghe, Sprinter Described as Sri Lanka's
'wonder girl', Susanthika Jayasinghe made history
in the Sydney Olympics by becoming the first
Sri Lankan woman to win an Olympic medal. Susanthika
clocked 22.28 seconds in the women's 200 meter
finals at Sydney to win the bronze medal, and
missed the silver by only 0.01 seconds. |

Jayasinghe was a surprise winner of the 200m silver
medal in the 1997 World Championships, becoming the
first Sri Lankan to win amajor medal since 1948. She
has also won medals at 1995 Asian Championships and
1994 Asian Games.
Muttiah
Muralitharan became the quickest bowler to reach
400 Test wickets in February, 2002 as Sri Lanka
thrashed Zimbabwe by 315 runs in the third Test
at Galle to complete a 3-0 series whitewash.
Muralitharan, 29, achieved the milestone in
his 72nd Test - eight fewer than Sir Richard
Hadlee, the previous record holder - by bowling
Henry Olonga as the tourists collapsed from
their overnight first innings score of 230 for
five to 236 all out. |

Sanath
Jayasuriya the Srilankan master blaster started
his international career in his favourite version
of the game-One day on 26 th December 1989 in
Melbourne, Australia. Born in the remote southern
village in Matara he learnt his early lessons
of cricket in St. Sylvester's College-Matara.

His first big break came in 1988 when he participated
in the Youth World Cup in Australia., then followed
the tour of Pakistan with the Sri Lankan B Team. In
this tour he scored back to back double centuries. He
played his first test match on 22 Feb 1991 against New
Zealand in Hamilton.
